Install Ruby on Rails on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 0
This is a follow-up post the previous articles I wrote on installing Ruby on Rails for Ubuntu Dapper Drake and Edgy Eft. This time around, I've moved away from Lighttpd and am deploying using Mongrel and Nginx. Why? I had a ton of problems with Lighttpd, from unexpected crashes to unexpected behavior. I learned an important lesson which I'll share: When possible, develop and deploy using the same tools. Because Mongrel is so great, we can do just that. So let's get started!
Amazon.com Web Services Presentation, 7 June 2007, 7pm 1
The field of services that Amazon.com offers continues to grow and can be broken down into infrastructure tools or web services. Many business, nonprofits and government entities are using these services to lower costs, and expand services while meeting sudden demands for messaging, backups, storage.
Entrepreneurs are finding niche markets utilizing these services. We all know how successful Amazon has been at the online shopping experience. Looks like they are leading again in Web Services. I wouldn't miss this one if you are looking for low cost, incremental solutions to growing your business, or helping out your employer. Oh yea, you can do it with Ruby.
Jeff's presentation will focus on:
- Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3--pay-per-use storage ),
- Amazon's Simple Queue Service, and
- Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2--on-demand computing),
Second Life, 37 Signals and other not-so-large businesses use Amazon's services to reduce hosting costs and maximize scalability.
This just in, an infoburst from Amazon: "Amazon.com spent 12 years and over $2 billion developing a world-class technology and content platform that powers Amazon web sites for millions of customers every day. Today, Amazon Web Services exposes this technology, through 10 open APIs, allowing developers to build applications leveraging the same robust, scalable, and reliable technology that powers Amazon's business."
Event will occur 7 June 2007, 7-9:30pm. Location will be at George Washington University, Blue/Orange GWU Metro stop:

New Meeting Format 0
AMRUG will be changing the format of meetings to be focused more on training. We are also eliminating the Google calendar and will be migrating to a Rails based system.
We will drop the presentation / chat agenda that has served us well for the last year or so. We are also looking into boosting the presentation capability of our donated space.
AMRUG has made good progress with the development of this website and the several corporate sponsors. Recent developments in the Coding Sphere regarding Ruby will heat up interest in Ruby and Rails. Moreover, the tech of Rails is changing so fast that it is difficult for many of us to keep up.
The next event will occur June 22, 2008, Sunday 10:30am-11:30am.
What is AMRUG

Ruby, and Ruby on Rails (RoR) drive the wiki, quiz, project manager, main website and agenda of this metro-accessible, Washington, DC, Ruby Users Group (RUG) in Adams Morgan, Washington, DC. This RUG was originally formed in 2002. It consists of numerous members who meet at a central city location, compare notes, roughly every two weeks. Visitors to Washington, DC are encouraged to contact me (ken dot rubo AT gmail D OT com) for coffee breaks during weekdays, and residents are encouraged to drop an email, or opine at this website. Adams Morgan Ruby Users Group (AMRUG) is metro-accessible Ruby. We are located in a central location of DC, in the busy restaurant, bar, bookstore, and cafe environs of Adams Morgan. Meetings occur in different venues that are metro-accessible, depending on who is interested and usually occur on the weekends. AMRUG aims to help members in two ways. AMRUG meets to help members share resources. And, AMRUG encourages digital barnraising--that is, building projects together that no one person could do alone, for the benefit of the community. |
